As an instructor of history, my vocation is to equip, enable, and encourage students to investigate events of the past, discern meaning from those events, and use that meaning to interpret events of other times and places, including our contemporary world.
Historical knowledge is a potent kit of tools and information that students acquire of their own volition. Our responsibility is to create a setting in which they observe its value, learn how to wield it, and package it for future use. This setting must foster comfort with recognizing new information or contexts, drawing conclusions independently, and making well-supported arguments, both as an individual and in collaboration with others.
